Moving Right Along

Posted January 15, 2019

For some time now, I’ve wanted to start my own business again. I remember really enjoying it the last time (you may remember that I previously started and ran a web hosting business for about 10 years during the early days of the internet), but I also remember the amount of time and energy it demanded.

Obligations in my personal life and day job, both of which are enjoyable and a priority, make it clear I can’t do it alone and coordinating with others has been difficult. We’re all busy.

So, instead of waiting, I’m going to start writing right away. Instead of anticipating the day when I can finally start working on this stuff I’m passionate about, I’m seizing the day.

I want to be making stuff I want to use, too, instead of just dreaming about doing it one day as a business. That’s what I enjoy and would love to see it benefit other people, too. To that end, I want to work on some of these projects as Open-Source Software and I’ll use the venerable adminware.com as the umbrella for these. I’ve had it forever and always wanted to do something cool with it.

The business stuff will happen. I’m always open to opportunities and I’ll know when it’s right. If you’re working on something cool, let me know!

Until then, I’m just having fun.

(Side note: I’ve recently introduced one of my older daughters to Python and that got me thinking about ways to co-learn with them about the newest technologies. Making things is a great way to do that, as long as you’re not doing so in Perl or VB6. 😉)

Once it’s clear which projects and products are most useful and popular, those could be targeted for enterprise-grade or SaaS versions that could be further developed, customized, and supported by a business. This allows me to concentrate on what I’m passionate about (creating useful things, collaborating, learning) and not worry about what I can’t control for now.

I’ve begun working on the first project, Deeper, and it’s already a functional alpha running on SQL Server 2012-2019 and both PowerShell 5.x and PowerShell Core 6.1. If you would be interested in contributing (feedback, consulting, coding, beta-testing) in any way, I’d love to have you involved so please let me know.

I’m excited, hopeful, and relieved.
