Parental Hypocrisy in Education

We want better for our children. We go to extreme measures at times to do so.
Why, then, are we so complacent about their education?
In every other aspect, if we felt our lives growing up lacked in any way, we strive to provide a better experience for our children. We go overboard even.
But school? For some reason we just let it go...
"Nah, it sucked for me but I survived. Suck it up, son. You will, too."
We treat it as a rite of passage instead of an amazing and once in a lifetime chance to provide a solid and lasting foundation. We know the system sucks, yet we seem to do everything we can to perpetuate the broken
This is not the area to be nonchalant in. Education is more important than ever. Not the shoveling of "facts" but the importance of curiosity, discovery, and skepticism.
The problem is, none of us know how to fix it. We watch other countries doing things the right way, or at least a better way, while we watch bureaucracy, red tape, and politicians wear away at our patience and squander the opportunity to create the future we wanted for our children.
I'm no better - I don't have an answer and it pains me. I would love to be able to provide a better education for my children yet I feel utterly helpless.
