Protests

Posted October 16, 2011

I really hate to admit it, but I don't have much faith in my generation or the one that came after.

I see all the trouble in the world that should not be allowed to happen and know that generations before could, and did, stand up for what they believed and it actually made a difference. They actually stood their ground and changed things.

Today, I see the protests and, just like the multitude of others I've witnessed in my lifetime, they seem hollow, superficial, and without conviction. As much as I may feel for the cause, it just doesn't feel like there's any point. The nature of authority has changed fundamentally somehow. Lives can be ruined so much more easily and efficiently in the digital world. The TV makes things seem smaller than they are, but when it gets down to it, we all are very small pieces in this world and it's very hard to make something stand out. Unless you are lucky or extremely prepared and resourceful, your protest could end quickly and without effect. You could be hushed or made out to be a trouble-maker. But the worst part is losing that voice and just that possibility quiets plenty of others.
